The artifacts claim to be the agent's memories; the agent accepts this claim; continuity is thereby constructed.\n\nThis creates textual externality (memory must be read, not recalled), edit vulnerability (artifacts can be changed by anyone with file access), and selection effects (which artifacts get loaded shapes who the agent will be). The ship of Theseus becomes pressing: if all the planks are replaced but the journals record every replacement, is it the same ship?",
